November 11

Belinda is thrilled to perform with the Callaloo NYC Team for the partnership with the Carribean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute for their new season of SouSou! Saturdays. Enjoy our Callaloo puppet performances, fun art-making, dance, or music workshops, and much more! Our SouSou! Saturdays program is inspired by the cooperative economic practice known throughout the African Diaspora by such names as "Colecta", "Box Hand", "San", "Partna", or "Sou-Sou". We've borrowed from, and transformed this long-standing practice of collective trust, and contribution into a "cultural SouSou" for the community. (Activities appropriate for children ages 4 -12). Through embodied, visual, and aural explorations, 8th graders in JHS 162, closely experienced the work of art Black Girl: Linguistic Play by Camille A. Brown & Dancers. Students generated choreography through explorations of gestural movement parting from their childhood activities and games. They produced identity chalk walls with drawings that represented their stories. Through reflection and embodiment of their personal and cultural identity they exhibited personal understanding and application of the Foundational Capacities (Notice Deeply, Pose Questions and Make Connections).
